Day 31 Holden Beach, NC to Myrtle Beach, SC

Sadly, I did not have an Italian ice for breakfast. They don’t open until noon. I did have a rather unpleasant coffee, however. When you are living on a boat, you make due. After coffee we paid for our spot on the dock at the town hall and took showers before leaving.

Here is something you may not know: Marina’s take water conservation and energy conservation to a whole new level. For example, to get water flowing from this particular shower, you need to press a small button below the faucet, and press it hard. This gets water flowing for about 15-20 seconds at best, and then it abruptly stops. If you are an avid reader of these amazing stories, then you know I get land sick. That is when you get on land and have the wobbles. These wobbles are much more pronounced with eyes closed, which one does while showering to avoid getting soap in one’s eyes.

First, a little set up. This is just a shower room. A small room in the back of a small building with one small window. The lights are on a motion sensor set to automatically turn off at about 10 minutes. The water flow is at about 15-20 seconds with very aggressive push of a very small metal button.  And, lastly, the shower head is at the end of a bending tube that has a holder on the wall that it doesn’t fit into.

Walking in I knew none of this. I put my shower kit on the shelf and, fully clothed, I press the button.  Immediately the shower head pops out of the holder spraying erratically all over me fully clothed.  I yell “holy shishkabob!” and jump back.  The water turns off.

I get smart and undress putting my towel and clothes far away. I place the hose back in the holder and get under the spray. I push the button. The shower head pops out and clocks me in the head.  I yell “holy hamburgers!” (vegan, of course) and jump back.

I get even smarter.  I soap up, I grab the shower head, I barely get the button pressed because now I’m slippery, I close my eyes to spray off the soap and nearly fall from the wobbles. The water shuts off.

I now realize I am not smart. I swear just a little. With one eye closed from soap in the eye, I grab the shower head, I brace myself against the wall with the hand pushing the button, I spray the water on my face to get the soap out of my eye. The lights go out.

This frog is my witness.

The coolest dinghy I have ever seen!
