Day 3 David’s Island NY to Statue of Liberty

We woke with the sun, pulling in the anchor with our coffees still steaming in our mugs.  There was no time for Wordle or idle chitchat as we had Hell’s Gate and the East River to ride through and timing matters: if you don’t hit the tides right, you will be at a stand still.

The first few hours were easy under motor.  Michael took meetings and I worked for Charter Oak State College practicing some pretty mad programming skills.  Carrie stayed on the bow ensuring no obstacles threatened Irish Eyes while John motored us closer to Hell’s Gate.

There are many bridges we needed to pass but none would be mistaken for Hell’s Gate.  She is large and ornate and marks the beginning of a wild ride.  Once we passed under her Michael and I came out of our boat offices and braced for the adventure.

Hell’s Gate is aptly named if you get sea sick.  She marks the beginning of the changing tides.  As we rode the heavy tide in the wind push us back causing a tidal rip that tried to spin us around and knocked us from side to side.  It was fantastic.

I am not a city girl in any way but seeing manhattan from the East River was completely awesome.  Going wildly under huge bridges and dodging obstacles like enormous barges, high speed ferries, and many sea planes landing and taking off like taxis was such an adventure.  Seeing the empire state building buzzing with helicopters and the gorgeous buildings lining the water was so very cool.

It took us about an hour and a half before we made the turn that gave us the view of the Statue of Liberty in all of her glory.  It is really hard to comprehend what she is like in real life.  Pictures do not do her justice.  We gave ourselves a few passes to take her in and then we anchored out nearby and toasted ourselves on an incredible wild journey and we toasted Lady Liberty and thanked her for welcoming my great grandparents into this beautiful country.

Tonight, as i write this, she can be seen over my shoulder.  I raise my arm and wave back.
