Day 1 New London CT to Branford CT

There were little things to learn here and there; things we should have brought, fans and lights that stopped working, ways to catch the wind a little better.  But the day was simply perfect.  I am not silly enough to think this will be the norm but I am smart enough to embrace it.  We cooked great food, read books, took in the sun, and took several cat naps.

This trip has been something we have talked about and planned and provisioned for for over a year.  We practiced all last summer on a center console in the Long Island Sound motoring from CT to NY to RI.  We would run through ‘the race’ time and again and test our skills at fishing (we are terrible- no offense, mates!)  We worked on Irish Eyes all winter and into the spring and it was hard work and sometimes frustrating because as they say “Everything on your boat is broken, you just don’t know it yet!”.

Here I sit, after the planning and practice and projects and the wind is blowing and the sun is rising and the seagulls are singing their song and already I can say it was worth it.

My shipmates have always been in my heart and we made jokes about throwing each-other overboard but in truth they are the perfect dynamic.  My husband, the captain, is a brilliant MacGyver.  He, more than any if us, belongs on the water.  His sense of it all and his calmness in all situations guides us with a steady hand. My brother (in-law) is our planner and our meteorologist and he claims he will gut and grill fish if Carrie or John ever catch one.  I believe him because Michael is the type of person that steps up to the plate.  You give him any challenge and he doesn't balk. He just does it. He comes to any adventure with open arms and heart. My sister is crazy. I love so many things about her but that is one of my favorite things. Nothing scares her and she gets me to do things my anxious personality would not otherwise allow.  I may close my eyes and crush her hand when I walk into the flames with her but I will still go into that fire and because of that my life has been so full.

I love my mates and I love Irish Eyes and this is the beginning of one of our greatest adventures.
